Four Potters

The archives state 4, the extant announcement card says 5, either way, there were plenty of Potters showcasing the Art Gallery's first full fledged crafts exhibition. Mark Fleming, Val Sanders, Jean Balmer & Dave Stewart. were all acclaimed local artists & artisans, many would go onto be influential in the San Diego Art Scene.

Patricia Nelson – Paintings

"I paint purely as I feel"

 

Local artist, and San Diego State Graduate, Patricia (Pat) Nelson was quoted discussing her non-representational abstract paintings and drawings on display, that were concerned with color and space.

Student Christmas Show

Art & Design Students expressed Christmas in a variety of ways from clay figures, to bronze stars and tissue paper collages.

Jan 7 - 27, 1963

Calligraphy Show

A touring exhibition featuring examples of Italic or Chancery handwriting collected from children of all ages and adults from “all walks of life”. Bob Matheny’s interest in fine printing, which brought an end to widespread use of calligraphy, prompted the choice.

Feb 11 - March 1, 1963

Annual Purchase Award Show, All Media

102 San Diego County Artists submitted works in all media for the first Purchase Award show, and only 28 were selected to be shown, with awards presented by San Diego Fine Art Gallery Director, Warren Beach.

The abstract painting “Chamber North” (seen in image with Matheny & Robinson) by La Jollan artist Dorothy Stratton won the $300 first prize and became part of SWC’s permanent art collection. Concerns over the money spent on a misunderstood abstract painting caused misgivings across campus, but some Faculty lent their support.

Future Palomar College Faculty and SWC solo gallery exhibitor, Russell Baldwin won the second place prize for his bronze titled "The First at August's"

Mead Paper's Creativity on Paper - '62

Bob Matheny's graphic design work was selected to appear in a previous year of the paper company Mead's sponsored annual celebration of commercial art and printing. The selected entries included pamphlets, brochures and reports.
